England’s batsmen took control of proceedings on an exhilarating second day. Zak Crawley fell early, while Ollie Pope struck an impressive knock of 121 to give England control of proceedings.
Spinners Gus Atkinson and Dillon Pennington will aim to impress in order to secure their place in the 14-man squad for the remainder of this series. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith was selected in place of injured Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes. Here we will discuss England vs West Indies T20I matches.
England Team
England have the opportunity to write history when they face an in-form West Indies team at Lord’s on Friday, in front of their home fans. England are expected to field the same team that won both group matches before, looking for an extraordinary performance before their supporters at Lord’s.
England’s batting has been one of the tournament’s strongest points and they can score big totals. While Windies batsmen have struggled, but have an impressive young lineup capable of producing shock results; for instance, in 2017 they surprised England at Headingley and this year created one of the more memorable wins by beating Australia at Brisbane.
West Indies innings could have put them closer to an unlikely victory, but Joshua Da Silva and Shamar Joseph’s second-wicket stand of 71 put an end to any hopes for comeback from West Indies batsmen. Meanwhile England made an assured start, losing Zak Crawley for an early duck, but Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope made up for any lack of width with cover drives and sweeps which punished any marginal deviation in pace from either bat or ball.
Stokes then pulled a short ball from Joseph for six to reach his highest Test score from 18 balls – 41 off 18! He added four runs more, coming within 15 per cent of Sir Ian Botham’s record for fastest Test fifty.
West Indies have had difficulty hitting the ball but their bowling has been effective. They’ve conceded just three runs an over and captain Jason Holder has been particularly strong with both pace and spin bowling.
Rovman Powell will hope his team can improve as the series goes along, but England should prove too strong and deep for them to overcome. It will also serve as James Anderson’s final red-ball cricket match before retiring after 163 Test matches and taking 705 wickets (seventh highest all time wicket taker).
West Indies Team
England’s top-order batsmen put on an impressive performance against West Indies at Trent Bridge on Wednesday in their Super Eights match, recording unbeaten centuries from Phil Salt and Jonny Bairstow that enabled England to defeat them by eight wickets with 15 balls remaining in their Super Eights game.
West Indies have proven themselves an unstoppable force this tournament in T20 cricket, winning all their group stage matches to secure an entry into the quarter-finals. They look set for another successful outing at Saint Lucia.
Jason Holder has led the Windies’ batting, scoring two fifty-plus scores and hitting several big shots throughout this tournament. His record against England in Test cricket includes scoring two double-hundreds and taking 37 wickets; however, in T20 cricket his form has declined after an initially strong start.
England made an outstanding start to their innings and established themselves as strong favorites to control the rest of it. England scored 185 in their initial powerplay before restricting Windies to 180-4 with Roston Chase and Nicholas Pooran both performing admirably for them, yet due to late collapse they fell short of their target score.
After an initial delay for the introduction of a new ball, Joe Root and Harry Brook began building an effective partnership, adding 108 runs at fourth wicket to put England ahead by 207 runs.
Both players performed admirably in the morning session and were assisted by a steady supply of runs from their lower order batsmen. The wicket had plenty of life and allowed both batsmen to score quickly.
Mark Wood was in excellent form with the ball during the afternoon session, hitting four fours and sixes during his five-for-seven spell. This forced Windies batsmen to reconsider their strategies and take more risks to score runs needed for victory.
Bowlers were on top form and West Indies managed to take advantage of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid spinners while making several successful runs against England, but unfortunately failed to close out an unlikely victory against them. West Indies could milk those spinners but never managed to turn that advantage into any wins; additionally they dropped numerous catches – one chance could have given them victory against England!
Toss
The toss is an integral component of cricket matches and can have a dramatic effect on their outcome. When making their decision in test matches, the captain who wins the toss selects whether to bat first or bowl first; in rainy conditions this favors batting teams while dry conditions give bowlers greater opportunities for runs scoring.
England are hoping to redeem themselves following an underwhelming start against India by hosting West Indies at Lord’s. The series starts on July 10, and features James Anderson’s final red-ball match before retiring. This Test match marks the first meeting between these teams since 2020 – England will hope that by making amends for their defeat then.
At the start of any cricket match, both teams want a strong start, and winning the toss will play an instrumental role in determining its outcome. A bowler with fast bowlers may have greater odds if they decide to bowl first due to softening pitches that support fast bowlers more readily; on the other hand, captains who choose bat first may put together large totals quickly enough to put pressure on opponents by scoring quickly themselves.
England fought back well despite starting off behind at Lord’s in their second innings, thanks to some impressive batting from Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope – they punished any minimal hint of width while Joe Root and Harry Brook shared a 150-run partnership to put England in an advantageous position.
Though toss is still an important element of cricket, winning it does not guarantee victory; but there are ways that can be done to try and enhance bat/ball balance; for instance some have suggested giving away teams the choice to bat first or bowl first so as to make games more performance based than luck-based.
Prediction
The match promises to be an intriguing affair as both teams are evenly matched. England have an advantage at home in Southampton Stadium which has become known for high scoring T20I matches. Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer will play major roles for their side as both are excellent batsmen with plenty of power hitting potential. Sam Curran and Will Jacks can contribute both with their batting and bowling capabilities.
The Windies have improved since their performance in the opening Test match, yet still require significant work to win this series. Their batting needs to improve for them to prevail while using bowlers effectively will allow them to take control of the match and see results that could seal victory for them in this series.
England won a narrow first Test victory and look to seal their series win at Lord’s. Jimmy Anderson may miss this matchup but England have other quality options at their disposal that should help secure another victory.
They will field a similar team to what was seen in their last match, with only James Anderson’s planned retirement from cricket at the end of this season likely making any noticeable differences to their composition; any other modifications should not impact on the result of this match.
Old Trafford’s pitch is known to favour batters, and both teams will employ an offensive style aimed at setting pace-heavy attacks. There may also be rain to add an additional challenge for their batters.
Batting will be at the heart of this match, while England bowlers must remain wary of Windies batsman who seek an early lead against their bowlers – this puts pressure on England to remain accurate enough and take advantage of Old Trafford’s quick outfield.
